How have headphones changed over the years? ›

From single-ear to earbuds, from wired to wireless, from active noise cancelling to acoustic technology, the development of headphones has been constantly evolving. Modern headphone designs are more ergonomic, comfortable, and have better sound quality and richer features.

By the 1890s a listening device with two earpieces – which was not mounted on the head – was developed by the British company Electrophone. The device created a listening system through the phone lines that allowed the customer to connect into live feeds of performances at theaters and opera houses across London.

The first true headphones, as we know it now, were designed by an engineer called Nathan Baldwin on his kitchen table. As much as people ignored his invention, the US Navy understood the importance of his invention and bought hundreds of them. These were used for defence purposes.

Headphones allowed people to listen to music in solitude. After both World Wars, in 1950 a man named John C. Koss invented stereo headphones for personal music consumption, and they have flourished into the headphones that we have today.

The ubiquity of modern headphones could perhaps be attributed to the Sony Walkman, which debuted in 1979 and almost immediately became a pop culture icon.

The Navy - 1910

Engineer Nathaniel Baldwin invented the first pair of audio headphones resembling modern day pairs at his kitchen table in 1910. The Navy ordered 100 pairs, not knowing that Baldwin was making them by hand.

It wasn't until 1937 that the first pair of dynamic headphones for home use was invented by the German company BayerDynamic. However, in 1958 John Koss invented the first ever stereo headphones, the Koss SP-3, as a jazz lover he was tired of using the low-quality headphones used by radio operators.

Baldwin's headphones contained a mile-long coil of copper wiring in each earcup, which received sound without using electricity, and set the precedent for the large cup shape of modern earphones. The headset's earphones were connected across the head by two elegantly spaced bands.

Back when they were first invented the primary use for the product was telephone operators to have their hands free while they were on the phone. Hence the “head” and “phone” in the name. Then years later once people starting mainly using them for listening to music and audio they just keep the name.

Most advice suggests that headphones don't so much degrade as cut-out completely. The drivers are pretty hard wearing so often it'll be the connectors, solder and cable joints that go first. You might not own your headphones long enough to hear a loss in sound quality.
