Noise-cancelling headphones have become ubiquitous, offering a haven from the constant cacophony of modern life. But while they provide a peaceful escape, Dr Deepti Sinha, Lead Consultant in the Department of ENT at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, cautioned of potential downsides, especially with prolonged use.

Are noise-cancelling headphones inherently bad?

“No, noise-cancelling earphones/headphones aren’t inherently bad for your health,” said Dr Sinha. “They offer advantages like blocking out low-frequency noise and improving focus on work or studies.”

The downside of prolonged use

Dr Sinha emphasised responsible use as prolonged use of noise-cancelling headphones can cause problems, such as these:

Hearing Fatigue: Just like regular earphones, using noise-cancelling headphones for extended periods at high volumes can cause hearing fatigue. This can manifest as temporary discomfort, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), or muffled hearing.

Headaches: Some users experience headaches due to the constant low-level hum generated by the noise-cancellation technology.

Disrupted Awareness: “The bigger concern is situational awareness,” explained Dr Sinha. “Noise cancellation creates a quieter environment, which can be fantastic, but it can also make you miss important sounds, like traffic or approaching sirens. This lack of awareness can be dangerous in situations where you need to be alert, like crossing streets or cycling.”

Hearing loss: In noisy environments, people often crank up the volume on regular headphones to hear clearly. Noise-cancelling headphones, however, eliminate background noise, potentially leading users to listen to music or podcasts at unnecessarily high volumes. This can still damage your hearing over time, even if the external noise is blocked.

Striking a healthy balance

Here’s how to enjoy the benefits of noise cancellation without compromising your hearing health:

Limit Listening Time: Take breaks and avoid using them for extended periods.

Monitor Volume: Keep the volume at a safe level, even in noisy environments.

Maintain Awareness: Be mindful of your surroundings, especially when using them outdoors or in busy areas.

Consider Alternatives: For moderate noise reduction, regular earbuds might suffice.

Listen to your body: If you experience any discomfort, stop using them and consult a doctor if necessary.

Noise cancelling headphones offer undeniable benefits, but like any technology, moderation is key. By being mindful of potential risks and adopting safe listening practices, you can continue to enjoy the peaceful escape they provide without compromising your hearing health.
