Switch between noise control modes (2024)

You can switch between noise control modes while listening to audio on AirPodsPro (all generations) or AirPodsMax.

  • Adaptive Audio on AirPods Pro (2nd generation): Combines Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode into one additional mode, which automatically adjusts the level of noise control for you based on the changing noise conditions in your environment.

  • Noise Cancellation: Blocks out external noise to help you focus.

  • Transparency: Lets you hear the sounds around you.

  • Off: Turns off all noise control modes.

With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can also turn on Conversation Awareness to automatically lower the volume during a conversation and enhance voices in front of you, use Personalized Volume to adjust media volume using your environmental conditions and volume preferences over time, and use Loud Sound Reduction to automatically reduce loud harsh noise around you.

  • On AppleTV: Go to Settings Switch between noise control modes (12)> Accessibility> AirPods, then turn on Noise Cancellation with One of your AirPods.

Use Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, and Loud Sound Reduction with AirPods Pro (2nd generation)

With AirPods Pro (2nd generation), you can turn on Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, and Loud Sound Reduction.

  • Conversation Awareness makes it easier to interact with people nearby. When you start speaking, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of your media and enhances voices in front of you, while reducing additional background noise.

  • Personalized Volume helps adjust the media volume for you by taking into account your environmental conditions and your system volume preferences over time.

  • Loud Sound Reduction automatically reduces harsh noise—like sirens or construction—around you for more comfortable listening (available with your AirPods on iPhone or iPad).

  1. Wear both of your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • On iPhone or iPad: Go to Settings Switch between noise control modes (13), tap the name of your AirPods near the top of the screen, then turn on Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, or Loud Sound Reduction.

    • On Mac: Choose Apple menu Switch between noise control modes (14)> System Settings, click the name of your AirPods in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), then turn on Conversation Awareness or Personalized Volume.

When Conversation Awareness is turned on, media volume lowers when you start speaking; if you’re listening to spoken media, like a podcast, the media pauses after a few seconds. The media remains at a low volume (or paused) as long as your conversation continues and returns to its previous level after your conversation ends. To manually end the conversation (for example, if people are talking around you, but you aren’t part of the conversation), press and hold the stem.

You can also turn Conversation Awareness on or off in Control Center on iPhone or iPad. Touch and hold the volume control, then tap Conversation Awareness.
