Ingredients

  • 2 (8 oz.) 2 (230 g) ripe tomatoripe tomatoes
  • ½ (513 oz.) ½ (150 g) cucumber
  • ½ (2 oz.) ½ (55 g) red onionred onions
  • ½ (2½ oz.) ½ (70 g) green bell peppergreen bell peppers
  • 10 oz. (2 cups) 280 g (450 ml) feta cheese
  • 10 10 black greek olives
  • ¼ cup 60 ml olive oil
  • ½ tbsp ½ tbsp red wine vinegar
  • salt and pepper
  • 2 tsp 2 tsp dried oregano

Making low carb simple

Instructions

Instructions are for 2 servings. Please modify as needed.

  1. Chop the tomatoes and cucumber into bite-sized pieces. Thinly slice the red onion and green bell pepper. Arrange on a serving platter or plate the salad on individual serving plates.

  2. Add the feta cheese and olives, and drizzle olive oil and red wine vinegar over the salad.

  3. Season with salt and pepper according to taste. Sprinkle with dried oregano and serve.

Tip!

Want a different look? Try cherry tomatoes or swap the colors around — yellow tomatoes with orange or red bell peppers are just as pretty. You can also crumble the feta and sprinkle it over. Different presentations, but the same classic taste.

    The calories are from the fats. Keto is low carb, high fat which means the recipes tend to have more calories (but we tend to eat smaller servings as the food is richer and more filling). Salads without the good fats are just carb bombs.

    Wow, even my 4 & 6yo boys downed it! They didn’t even complain about the onions! Though I only used 3/4 onion (6 servings), but it was a pretty large onion.

    At 15g carbs, you could start with reducing the number of tomatoes or greens.

    probably from the cheese and olive oil.. 200 grams is a lot for a salad in my opinion.. I usually put 50 grams of Balkan cheese and that's more than enough for me

    reducing the veggies :)
    I generally put a lot of leaves in my salads (lettuce, spinach, arugula etc), but keep in mind that every salad is gonna be high in carbs especially if you love veggies, so I usually eat them only when I know that I had a "low carb day".. so if I had bacon and eggs for breakfast, and then salmon and avocado for lunch

    I love this salad!
    I just change the bell pepper to orange or yellow to have different colours and vitamins ;)
    One small tip: after chopping the onions, but the slices on a cold water bath for a few minutes. It decreases the acidity.

    Finally someone that makes the 1 true Greek Salad (Classic Horiatiki) instead of the usual oddball combinations typically found here in the States (including those made by Greek-Americans who also swear their Beef and Lamb Turkish Doner Kabop meat is just like you will get in Athens, Greece. The same G/A folks that also just mix cucumbers and yogurt or horror of horrors add mayo to the mix and call it true Greek Tzatziki). You have redeemed our faith in at least a portion of humanity and now even world peace may be possible ;-)

    Wonderful recipe and a deliciously beautiful photo as well.

    How many carbs would there be in this salad if I left out the bell peppers and olives, used lemon and white vinegar instead of red wine vinegar and 1 tomato instead of 1.5?

    Green peppers and olives have about 3 net carbs per 100 grams each. Lemon is about 6.6 net carbs per 100 grams and tomatoes are about 2.69 net carbs per 100 grams.     Hi, Lynn! You can simply omit the olives if you like! Or you can substitute with more of one of the other ingredients that you prefer.

    Yes a true Greek salad finally. I am surprised about the number of carbs. I guess the recipe must have originally called for lemon. I am really surprised it is that high in carb content. I have heard that it can kick you out of ketosis. Is that true. A lot of lemon is used in Greek cooking as is vinegar. Maybe that helps offset it?

    Hi, Cynthia! Unfortunately, this isn't one of our keto recipes. This is a moderate low carb recipe, as indicated by the yellow circle with the carb count. Basically everything in this recipe has carbs, aside from the olive oil. You could choose to eat a smaller portion if you're wanting it to fit for keto, but it may still be too many carbs for your day depending on your other meals.
