Warning: Spoilers for Legacies season 4, episode 10, "The Story of My Life."
CW's Legaciesjust brought backa powerful vampire ability by finally remembering one of Hope's greatest powers from The Originals. After a two-month break, Legacies returned following a mid-season finale that drastically raised the stakes for Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd). Legacies season 4, episode 10, "The Story of My Life," raised the tension even furthermakingHope being the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan), the Original Hybrid, significant again in one key way. Like her father, she was born with an ability that makes her a force to be reckoned with.
In the episode, Hope tracks downProfessor Vardemus (Alexis Denisof), who is now a lecturer at Whitmore College, a school that teaches regular, human students. After sitting in on his class, she brings him a sarcophagus in which she’s trapped Lizzie Saltzman.Hope "killed" her in the last episode but hadn't realized Lizzie had purposely swallowed vampire blood beforehand. Lizzie awakened in transition,thereby becoming avampire/witch hybrid, known as a Heretic. Hope plans todestroy thesarcophagus and starve Lizzie of blood before she can complete her transition, effectively killing her, but Lizzie completesher transition. Despite the horrible things Hope has done to her, Lizzie finds that she is incapable of harming or letting any harm come to Hope. It's a strange turn of events considering how desperately Lizzie desires to kill Hope. At first, it seemed as though it might be Lizzie's subconscious stopping her, but it was something else entirely.

After testing his suspicions, Vardemus reveals that an ability of Hope's was inadvertentlytriggered, an ability that hasn’t been used since The Originals.It turns out that Lizzie became sire bonded to Hope after she drank the blood that Hope had donated to the Salvatore School’s first aid kits, thinking the blood belonged to a random vampire. As the Original Hybrid, Klaus was known for creating other vampire/werewolf hybrids who were then sire bonded to himand Hope gained that ability genetically through her father. Lizzie isn't the first person that Hope siredor even the first time that the strangeness of hybridshas been a plot point in the world; The Originals season 2saw hybrid Hayley, Hope's mother, struggling with her new powers, for example.But Legacies' plot twist does mark the first time that Hope sired anyone since she was revealed to have this ability in The Originals. And it will certainly be the first time that Hope exploits the sire bond for her own aims.
This is an interesting time to explore Hope's ability to create hybrid sires, as she is cominginto her full potential as a tribrid. With Lizzie unable to kill her as planned, and bound to do whatever Hope tells her,Lizzie now becomes a tool inHope's plan to fight Aurora (Rebecca Breeds), the powerful vampire with a vendetta against the Mikaelsons. Having this power over Lizzie could inspire Hope to create more sires, especially with her humanity turned off.
In the episode, Hope lords her power over Lizzie gleefully by making her hop on one leg, among other small humiliations, but the bond could ultimately serve their relationship. With Alaric still stuck in limbo, Lizzie and Hope have to face their changing dynamic without any real guidance. However, being unable to act on her rage toward Hope has turned Lizzie into an unwilling ally, which is sure to lead to some humorous banter this season.
The full extent of Hope's abilities as a tribrid have yet to manifest, but that gives Legacies a big opportunity to finally allow Hope to grow as a character. Klaus' legacy has hung over Hope since The Originals. A throughline of this season has been how Hope is a lot more like her father than she cares to admit, and her forcing Lizzie into servitude is more proof of that. The real treat, however,will be seeing how Hope and Lizzie navigate their new dynamic.
