Charge the AirPods or AirPodsPro case

To charge the AirPods or AirPodsPro case, do one of the following:

  • Charge with a cable: Connect the case to a power outlet using a Lightning to USB Cable and a compatible power adapter.

If the case for your AirPods Pro (2nd generation) has a USB-C connector, connect the case to a power outlet using a USB-C cable and a compatible power adapter.

  • Wireless charging case: For AirPods (2nd generation) or AirPods (3rd generation) with a wireless charging case, or AirPodsPro (all generations), place the case with the status light facing up on the center of a MagSafe wireless charger or a Qi-certified charger.

If you have AirPodsPro (2nd generation), you can also place the case—with the status light facing up—on the center of an Apple Watch wireless charger.

When the case is aligned properly with the charger, the status light turns on for several seconds, then turns off while the case continues to charge. By default, the charging case for AirPods Pro (2nd generation) also plays a sound, but you can turn it off. See Turn off charging case sounds on AirPodsPro (2nd generation).

Check the charge status

If your AirPods are in the case and the lid is open, the light on the case shows the charge status of your AirPods. When your AirPods aren’t in the case, the light shows the status of your case.

Green means fully charged and amber means less than one full charge remains. If no light appears, you may need to charge your AirPods before you can use them again.

You can also check the battery percentage of your AirPods on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

  • iPhone or iPad: Open the case lid with your AirPods inside and hold the case close to your device. Wait a few seconds to see the charge status of your AirPods.

When your AirPods are connected to your device, you can also go to Settings Charge AirPods (all generations) or AirPods Pro (all generations) (5), then tap the name of your AirPods near the top of the screen to see the charge status.

  • Mac: Open the case lid or take your AirPods out of the case, and make sure they’re connected to your Mac. On your Mac, click Charge AirPods (all generations) or AirPods Pro (all generations) (6) in the menu bar, then choose your AirPods. See Pair AirPods with Mac.

See the Apple Support article Charge your AirPods and learn about battery life.

Tip: On your iPhone or iPad, you can also add a widget to your Lock Screen, Home Screen, or Today View to quickly check the battery level of your devices, including your AirPods. To learn more, see the iPhone User Guide or the iPad User Guide.
