Verging on an Epic failure with MyChartMy primary care provider set up a virtual visit using Epic's MyChart. I received a reminder two days in advance and decided to press the Test Hardware button in the message. I received a screen saying "Something went wrong." I guess that if you write software that fails, there's no point to writing informative error messages to go with it.I conferred with the provider's staff, who couldn't help me but gave me the phone number of the helpline at Mt. Auburn Hospital, who hosts that instance of MyChart.Luckily, I got through fairly quickly to a helpline staffer. She explained that the virtual visit is designed to accept logins 30 minutes in advance. Logins (and tests) are not expected to work before that time. In view of that explanation, the screen's advice to "Relaunch the test to try again" is not just irrelevant, but irresponsible and disrespectful. The Test Hardware button proved to be a useless distraction, because it had disappeared when I visited the web page for the appointment 30 minutes in advance. The hardware did work, and I logged in successfully. But what if the login had failed then? What if I had only a few minutes to try to fix a problem or would miss my visit? Can the healthcare field make more use of digital companies who design software with a rational purpose?

I was trying to debug my test hardware failures for a video call scheduled tomorrow. Thanks for documenting that it simply doesn't work too far in advance.

The reporting below 👇 highlights quintessential status quo healthcare. Judy Faulkner, Epic’s CEO, has a net worth of $6+ Billion.Part of this wealth was created after political donations were made and political influence was granted during the drafting of ACA-era rules. Ms. Faulkner was 'invited' onto a government 'advisory' committee that had influence over which EMR systems would flourish. If you guessed that EPIC was significantly advantaged, give yourself a star for being able to spot a master political operator.EPIC and Judy Faulkner are in favor of that which protects and enhances their own interest. In fact, that's largely what any company and CEO exist to do (as long as it's legal).Regardless, it's time to stop self-interested executives from using political influence for their advantage and, instead, start giving patients (all of us) the care we deserve.#healthcare

During my seven years at Epic, there was a consistent mantra across the company: we don't have preferred vendors, and we'll work with anyone who follows industry standards. That egalitarian openness was refreshing and meaningful (not to mention a little painful, because we in implementations often bent over backwards to work with vendors who didn't really follow all the standards). With the recent announcement of the Partners and Pals program, however, it seems Epic has abandoned the approach it once embraced. That concerns me, because it opens the door to exclusive interoperability options that only a few companies can enjoy. This is a bad practice and something I wanted to dive more deeplyinto with the latest edition of Nonstop Interop. -> https://lnkd.in/e3VpGHTVDo you share the same concerns? Am I overreacting? I'd love to know your thoughts as well. If Epic wants to prove me wrong and publicly commit to making all integration options equally available to all vendors, at the same time and the same cost, and with input from allied and non-partner companies alike—then I'll gladly admit my error. But until then, I hope our industry will fight such efforts to make deep integration with EHRs available only to a select few.Want Nonstop Interop updates in your email?
