You can use the DigitalCrown and the noise control button—located on the right headphone—to control audio, phone calls, FaceTime calls, and to activate Siri.
Control audio content
You can use the DigitalCrown and noise control button to do any of the following:
Play and pause audio content: Press the DigitalCrown. To resume playback, press it again.
Play the next track: Double-click the DigitalCrown.
To play and pause audio or to mute yourself during a phone call, press the Touch control on the stem of an AirPod. To resume playback or to unmute yourself, press again. To skip forward, double-press the Touch control. To skip back, triple-press the Touch control.
Press and hold the force sensor on the stem of an AirPod until a chime plays. When you're wearing both AirPods, press and hold the force sensor on either AirPod to switch between Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode, and Off.
To skip songs on AirPods Pro, double-tap the Force Sensor to skip a song. On AirPods 1st or 2nd generation, double-tap either AirPod to skip a song. To change your settings, wear your AirPods and go to "Settings" → "Bluetooth" → "AirPods".
Wear your AirPods Pro, and make sure they're connected to your device. Say “Hey Siri,” then use Siri to get answers to questions, control apps, and more.
Once pressed with the earbuds in the case, the button acts as a way for the AirPods to enter a pairing mode, allowing users of a non-Apple device to connect to them.
To pause audio while listening with both AirPods, remove one. When you return it to your ear, playback resumes automatically. Note: You can also set either of your AirPods to pause when you double-tap it, then resume play when you double-tap it again.
Make sure the 'Reduce Loud Sounds' toggle switch is set to 'off. You should also check Accessibility settings, as these can sometimes make your AirPods too quiet. Go to Settings, then Accessibility > Audio/Visual. Make sure the slider is in the middle between L and R.
Just put one or both AirPods in to start hearing audio. To quickly stop the audio, just remove the earbuds from your ears. If you ever want to turn off this Automatic Ear Detection, go to Settings > Bluetooth and then select the AirPods. Toggle off Automatic Ear Detection.
If you have first generation AirPods, double tap either earbud to wake Siri and ask Siri to adjust the volume. If you have second generation AirPods or later (this includes the AirPods Pro), and you've set up the "Hey Siri" function on your iPhone, say "Hey Siri" and ask Siri to adjust the volume.
With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth. Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods]. next to your AirPods in the list of devices. Under Press and Hold AirPods, tap Left or Right, then make sure that Noise Control is selected.
On iPhone or iPad: Open the Find My app , tap Devices, tap the name of your AirPods, then tap Play Sound. On Apple Watch: Open the Find Devices app , choose your AirPods, then tap Play Sound (requires a Wi-Fi or cellular connection). , then click Play Sound.
Alternatively, you can go to Settings > [your AirPods]. Tap the More Info button. next to your AirPods. Select the left or right AirPod to choose which AirPod you'd like to double-tap for Siri, playing or pausing audio content, or skipping between tracks.
Temporary bugs or some glitches might be the reason for touch controls not working on your AirPods or AirPods Pro. Unpairing the AirPods and then pairing them back again can help fix this issue.
Bluetooth has a limited connectivity range and so do your AirPods. The technology is also not immune to walls and other obstacles between the connected devices. If your AirPods keep pausing, you're probably just within the connectivity range but far enough to experience audio cut outs.
